Sustainability: Sharing is Caring - World Wide Efforts
Developing Sustainable Business Performance (SBP) I had the opportunity to discover other sustainability application based websites. As I have mentioned in the previous blog post I find it to be essential that we share such information so that all of us can mutually benefit from it:
- The Ashden Awards since 2001 have been promoting sustainable practices in the UK. Every year they hold a ceremony attended by the leading figures from business, academy, environment, politics. The winners are chosen among businesses, schools, local authorities and charities. International participants are warmly welcomed. Applications for the 2011 awards are now closed.
- Danish Architecture Centre has a Sustainable Cities database providing knowledge and inspiration on the sustainable planning of cities and best practice cases from Danish and international cities. The database was launched at the 11th International Architecture Biennale in Venice in September 2008.
- The Environmental Defense Fund with the collaboration of Net Impact two years ago launched a initiative called EDF Climate Corps. They are sending out their interns from MBA programs to these businesses. Their goal is to get Fortune 1000 companies to reduce their energy costs. The results and findings can be found here
- Ethipedia project is managed and edited by ethiquette, an information service on leading sustainable practices in the marketplace. Ethiquette makes its information accessible and actionable through its consumer-oriented website, www.ethiquette.ca and through its business-oriented website, ethipedia.net. The company also works hands-on to help business and institutional clients position themselves as sustainability leaders.
- The European Commission Directorate-General for Energy runs a initiative called ManagEnergy. It’s website is very resourceful with information concerning energy. It consists of a database of case studies which as of today consists of over 1000 successful practices. Yearly it gives out the ManagEnergy Local Energy Action Award to organizations which present the most innovative and efficient use of resources.
- LowCarbonEconomy.com a joint project between the United Nation's Climate Neutral Network (CN NET) aims to facilitate the move to global low carbon economies, a necessary imperative if we are to combat dangerous and escalating climate change. It features a Case Studies section.
- Skanska delivers over 12,000 projects each year. Skanska as a corporation has the most extensive database of sustainable practices which cover the social aspects, and environmental aspects of sustainability. The team is leaded by Noel Morrin (SVP Sustainability & Green Construction).
- World Wildlife Fund-UK runs the Green Game Changers Initiative is database of green ways of doing business. They are focusing on construction, consumer goods, energy, transportation, technology, and water.
Lastly our website, SBP is the first sustainability resource on the web that has gained permission to share and distribute findings of organizations in its field. As of today our knowledge generating network consists of over 20 partners:
- The Ashden Awards
- British Institute of Facilities Management
- Borderstep Insitut
- Celedonian Enviornment Centre
- Center for Industrial Productivity and Sustainability
- Colby College
- Danish Architecture Centre
- Factor 10 Insititute
- Holcim Foundation
- IMSA Amsterdam
- Japan for Sustainability
- Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
- National Insitute of Building Sciences
- Natural Resource Defense Council
- Product-Life Institute
- Portland Cement Association
- Rocky Mountain Institute
- The Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Partnership
- SKANSKA A.B.
- Sustainable Business Network
- Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research

Majority of the listed sources granted us permission to fully publish their findings. Sadly, we cannot do that due to search engine optimization regulations. Duplicate content is heavily penalized therefore at the moment we will not republish others work. However, in the future we are planning to adjust it to our knowledge framework and share it with our readers.
In Spring 2011 we are planning to release a set of case studies which are based on energy/waste assessments conducted by the students leaded by Jonathan T. Scott, during fall 2010. Stay tuned.
